Bandsaw Blade Speed Rates

Bandsaw blade speed is describe as the travel of the bandsaw blade across the material face being worked. This is expressed in surface feet per minute (SFPM). Bandsaw blade speeds range from 40 feet per minute to 5,000. It is important to remember that different materials require different blade speeds. For metal, typical blade speeds range from 60- to 300sfm. There are specialized bandsaws built to cut harder metals and require a speed greater than 300sfm. Woodworking bandsaws run at speeds between 1,00o- to 8,000 feet per minute. 3,000sfpm is the general speed. The blade speed rate depends on the …

Saw Blade Stripping and Breakage

Stripped bandsaw blade teeth is a common problem, and there are several causes to consider. A big factor includes use of the incorrect tooth pitch. Too small teeth for the size of the material fills gullets halfway through the cut. Pressure builds on a single tooth until it breaks and becomes lodged in the cut. Now the other teeth come in contact with the broken tooth, resulting in more broken teeth. Follow the m.o.m. rule: Minimum, Optimum, Maximum, which requires a minimum of 3- and a maximum of 24 teeth engaged in a cut in order to achieve the best …

Bandsaw Blade Tracking

Knowing how to properly track a bandsaw blade is important and something every bandsaw operator should have basic knowledge in performing. A blade needs to be properly tracked in order to ensure a smooth operation, secure operator safety, and to keep the bandsaw running optimally and smooth. It would be a waste of time and money to cut materials without first tracking the saw blade. Without it, crooked cuts result, equating to wasted materials. Damage to the machine or the blade after it pops from the wheels is likely to occur. There is also the risk of personal injury to …
